A bobbin lace made in spun gold, Lombardy or Liguria, Northern Italy, mid of the eighteenth century.
Description: Our lace was made with the technique of bobbin lace with gold yarn with an ecru silk core.
This technique consisted of a very long procedure. The lace needed a support, the pillow, upon which was leaning a paper with the drawing that had to be implemented; the pattern was then outlined by pins driven into the pillow. The bobbins, wooden sticks around which the threads (in our case of gold) were previously coiled, were used to weave the threads together, unrolling them from the bobbins to create the weave and the lace.
These laces were widely used in the seventeenth century, both in interior design and in clothing.
The main centers of production were in Lombardy and Liguria, in the northern part of Italy, and were often inspired by the Flemish laces.
Age: mid 18th century
Dimensions: height: 2 inc. Different lenghts: two laces of 110 inc. each; four of 29 inc., four of 21 inc.
